Don’t Settle for Just One Day!
“Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day” is not a new idea, but it is one that has taken hold more and more in our time. Championed in the film, Dead Poets Society and forced upon us through incessant, self-indulgent advertising, we are to “just do it,” the “it” being whatever feels right to us in the moment.Major ad campaigns have come out recently that encourage us as consumers to “seize your someday” (Wells Fargo) and “seize your moment” (AT&T). The world and our flesh scream at us to grab a hold of today as if it were worth something as valuable as forever. Why settle for just one day?
Don’t settle for just one day!
Seize Eternity is a movement. It is not a reaction to carpe diem, but the realization that to seize only one day is settling. One day is simply not enough. We are futile in our thoughts and finite in our ability to affect one, single day without the eternity promised to us through Christ. We are not able to make the most of every day or every moment without securing our place in eternity. And having done that, meaning put our faith and trust in Christ for salvation, we are compelled to live a life disengaging from the clutches of this world and engaging the culture for Christ. In essence, to Seize Eternity is to let go.
To Seize Eternity is to live today in light of how it will effect eternity. Think about it. What does that look like in the life of the Christian? We learn not to waste our time caught up in the snares of the world or entangled by various destructive patterns and habits. We lay aside the cares of this world, that we might run our race on this earth in a way that draws others to trust in Christ. It is not focusing on self, not serving self, not relying on self, not living for self.
To Seize Eternity is to let go of our way of thinking and doing in order to desperately cling to God’s way – Jesus. To truly make the most of every day, the assurance of eternal life is a must. It is the hope of heaven that propels us gratefully forward through a life of service, sacrifice, reconciliation, humility, and love. Don’t settle for just one day!
